Force Experiment Tool (FEXP) Updates

D
Written by Dan Bier

The Force Experiment Tool, which shows and controls the experiences running on any page of your site, has been redesigned. It’s now easier to see what’s actually being shown to you, and you can choose exactly which experiences run before you reload the page.

What’s new

  • Inclusion column: a tick shows each experience that is running on the page for you. Experiences that aren’t running are greyed out.

  • Turn experiences on or off: click a tick to include or exclude an experience, then Apply & Refresh.

  • Filters: include or exclude whole groups of experiences by mode (live or staging) and by experience type.

  • Active Experiment tag: the variation you’re currently in is tagged Active Experiment (or Pinned Experiment for a pinned staging experience).

  • Clearer variation names: variations show as C, V1, V2, matching the rest of the app. Hover over one to see more info.

How to open the tool

Open the tool on any page of your site that has the Webtrends Optimize tag. Installation instructions are here.

The tool lists every experience on the page. The Inclusion column shows which ones are running for you, and the experience and variation you’re in carry an Active Experiment tag.

How to use it

Step 1. To include or exclude a single experience, click its tick (or empty circle) in the Inclusion column. While you have unsaved changes, Cancel and Apply & Refresh buttons appear.

Step 2. To change whole groups at once, click Filters. In Global Filters, choose:

  • Mode: Live Mode or Staging Mode (live is the default)

  • Blanket Inclusion/Exclusion Rules: for each experience type on the page (ABn, Split, Target, MVT, Baseline), choose Force Include, Force Exclude or No Override. These overrides take priority over mode.

The Summary tells you how many experiences will run and how many will be excluded.

Step 3. Click Apply & Refresh. The page reloads and delivers only the experiences you chose. Excluded experiences are greyed out, and your choices are remembered while you browse.

Step 4. To see a specific variation, click its button (C, V1, V2…) on the experience’s row. Hover over a button to see more info.

Good to know

  • Choices on a single row take priority over filters. For example, if you exclude ABn experiences but tick one ABn experience, that one still runs.

  • Applying changes in Filters resets the single-row choices you made on the main screen.

  • The Live / Staging switch on the main screen does the same as changing the mode in Filters and clicking Apply & Refresh.

  • Clear All Cookies resets everything, including your filters, mode and overrides.

  • These changes only affect your browser. Your visitors aren’t affected.
