Custom Data Filters

Filter your reports by custom data

You can now filter any experience report by the custom data you send with your visitors’ pageviews, such as membership tier, customer type or basket value. See how your experience performed for exactly the audience you care about, without setting up a separate experience.

What is it?

Custom data is information about your visitor that you send to Webtrends Optimize, such as membership: gold or customer_type: returning. The new Custom Attribute filter on the report screen lets you narrow every number in the report to the visitors who match a condition.

The filter works on conversion (binomial) and non-binomial metrics, respects your report scope (users or sessions) and can be combined with the other filters, date ranges and dimensions.

Before you start

Your pages need to send custom data with the pageview. Add your values to the WT.customData object on the page at/near the top of your Optimize tag Global Tag Script, for example:

window.WT = window.WT || {}; WT.customData = { membership: 'gold', customer_type: 'returning' };

Your account manager can help you set this up in your tag configuration.

The Custom Attribute option only appears on a report once the experience has received custom data.

If data is not available on the page at the time of the tag running (before pageview), then you can trigger a conversion later giving it name "identity", and passing in the data. Data for this specific conversion will also be used in report custom data filtering.

How to filter a report by custom data

Step 1. Open the report for your experience and click Filters in the bar above the results.

Step 2. In the first dropdown, choose Custom Attribute.

Step 3. In the second dropdown, choose the custom data key you want to filter on. The list shows every key received for this experience.

Step 4. Choose how to compare the value:

  • is equal to / is not equal to: an exact match, for example membership is equal to gold

  • contains: part of the value, for example page_type contains product

  • is greater than / is less than: numbers, for example basket_value is greater than 50

  • is in list / is not in list: several values at once

Step 5. Enter the value. For is in list and is not in list, enter one value per line.

Step 6. Click Apply. The report updates, and your filter is listed under Filters applied. Remove it with its x, or click Clear all.

Good to know

  • With User scope, the report includes every visit and conversion from visitors who matched the condition at any point. With Session scope, it includes only the sessions where they matched.

  • Text comparisons (equal to, contains, in list) match the value as text. Greater than and less than treat the value as a number.

  • Add more than one filter and choose whether visitors must match All of them or Any of them.
